Description

Church Urban Fund National Conference 2015

Financial exclusion is one of the most pressing public policy issues of our time. In the UK today there are 1.9 million households without a basic bank account and over seven million people using high-cost credit. The distress caused by financial exclusion has dramatic effects not only on the lives of those directly affected, but also on society as a whole.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken passionately about the importance of this issue for our national life. His initiative has sparked widespread interest across the Church of England and other denominations to address the issue of financial exclusion at both a local and a national level.

Through this conference we want to bring together church leaders, church members, activists and community-based practitioners to:

  • Build understanding of financial exclusion – its causes, consequences and solutions
  • Reflect theologically on what a fairer and more inclusive financial system could look like
  • Showcase a variety of efforts to build financial inclusion and build the capacity of participants to join in those efforts in their local community

The conference will run between 10.00am - 4.00pm with lunch and refreshments provided. The morning session will be focused on hearing from our keynote speakers and the afternoon seminars will help with next steps and practical action. Full programme is available here.

Keynote Speakers

  • Sir Hector Sants: Chair of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Task Group on Responsible Credit and Savings. He is a vice-chairman at Oliver Wyman where he is leading a team that will review the competitiveness of the UK on behalf of the banking industry and is the Chair of StepChange Debt Charity. He was the Chief Executive of the Financial Services Authority from July 2007 until July 2012.
  • Professor Karen Rowlingson: Professor of Social Policy at the University of Birmingham and Director of the Centre on Household Assets and Savings Management (CHASM), launched in May 2010. She is currently involved in research on topics of inequality, social security and personal finance issues.
  • Canon Dr Angus Ritchie: Executive Director at The Centre for Theology and Community, helping equip churches to help transform their communities through the practices of community organising, theological reflection and prayer. Angus is also an Assistant Priest at St Peter’s, Bethnal Green and an Honorary Canon of Worcester Cathedral.
